The book (Qatari Press: Present Challenges and Future Prospects) has recently been published. It provides a study of the characteristics of Qatari press, the nature of its work, and the role it played as an effective authority in addition to the three well-known “legislative, judicial and executive” authorities.
The book, which was launched as part of the activities of Doha International Book Fair, was written by Dr. Khalid bin Mubarak Al Shafi, assistant professor of media at Qatar University and editor-in-chief of Qatari English-language newspaper (The Peninsula).
The book reviews the great role played by Qatari press as a source of reliable information, and a multi-opinion platform that enables the reader to obtain multiple data and enhance his confidence in the media content he receives, in light of the spread of social media, with its difficult-to-verify information.
The book also presents a new vision for facing journalistic challenges in aspects of technology, content, skills, policies, and the relationship with administrative systems, and everything that affects the future and development of the profession, and the values upon which the journalism industry is based.
Introducing the book, H. E. Sheikh Abdul Aziz bin Thani Al Thani, the CEO of Qatar Media Corporation, stressed that the role played by Qatari press deserves documentation, study, reflection and lessons learned. In order to ensure the continuity of the media development process, pointing out that the book “Qatari Journalism: Challenges of the Present and Future Prospects” does not stop at superficial quantitative treatment of information, but rather represents a comprehensive analytical approach, and has an evaluation spirit that makes it among the important studies and books that dealt with the subject of Qatari journalism.
His Excellency added that the importance of this book stems from the fact that it documents an important era in the history of journalism in Qatar, as it studies its reality and anticipates its future in light of the various challenges it faces, pointing out that Qatari press has enjoyed a unique climate in its regional environment, since the establishment of a professional and decentralized media, and is based on The correct theoretical and technical foundations, which made it go beyond the local frameworks to the Arab world and the rest of the world.
For his part, His Excellency Sheikh Khalid bin Abdul Aziz Al Thani, the Director of the Media Development Department at Qatar Media Corporation, expressed his admiration for the idea of the book, which discusses an important issue and a pivotal stage that the printed press in general and Qatari press in particular, and the impact of its media message in making purposeful content, directing public opinion, assisting decision-makers, and fulfilling the public’s aspirations in light of the challenges and negatives that social media platforms have faced.
His Excellency added that this book represents an important tributary that illuminates the way for everyone who seeks development and improvement, especially as it deals with the details of the past and reads what the future requires while looking into our hands, which makes it a reference for the history of journalism in Qatar, stressing the need for the media reality to move to a new stage of giving overcomes difficulties, and continues his path with the same strength, determination and will in light of the actual renaissance he is witnessing, and the provision of great support, infrastructure, satellite broadcasting technology, and trained national cadres.
Regarding his opinion on Qatari press and the prospects for its future, within the chapters of the book, His Excellency Mr. Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Rumaihi, the Director General of Qatar News Agency (QNA), stressed that the future of Qatari press is inseparable from the overall challenges facing the printed press in the world, which impose a new reality on it, in a complex and fast-paced life, this reality besieges it with many threats to continuity and influence, due to the information and communication revolution, the open skies, a shift in reading patterns, and sources of obtaining news at the moment of the event, in addition to economic conditions and determinants that raise the cost of issuing newspapers, with declining advertising rates. and distribution.
His Excellency warned that the Qatari press can find solutions and remedies that allow it to maintain its presence and influence, and give it a foothold and a precedent in the future, indicating that the press’s maintenance of its pioneering role in society is reinforced by confirming its presence in circles of influence, and getting closer to the issues, concerns and needs of society and overcoming its current problems by expanding and developing the umbrella of its editorial contributions, its multi-media and electronic platforms, taking advantage of what is available to it in the digital technology space of wide spaces and various options, especially as it maintains great capabilities, quality experiences, and a balance of credibility that helps it achieve this with ease.
It is noteworthy that the book is medium-sized, and issued in both Arabic and English. It includes six chapters that discuss: the emergence of Qatari press and its stages of development, its role in international relations, the characteristics of Qatari English-speaking press and its openness to the world, the space for media freedoms, the challenges of the present, and the prospects for the future.
