In a distinguished ceremony, Her Excellency Rachida Dati, France’s Minister of Culture, awarded His Excellency Sheikh Abdulrahman bin Hamad Al Thani, Qatar’s Minister of Culture, the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Order of Arts and Letters) at the rank of Commander—the highest distinction of this prestigious French honor.
The Order of Arts and Letters is awarded to individuals who have made significant contributions to the world of culture and the arts, whether in France or internationally. This recognition celebrates Sheikh Abdulrahman’s vital role in strengthening cultural ties between Qatar and France, and his ongoing efforts to support the arts, literature, and the broader cultural scene in his country.
Since his appointment as Minister of Culture, Sheikh Abdulrahman has led the implementation of a comprehensive cultural strategy in Qatar. His vision centers on reinforcing national identity, nurturing creative talent, and expanding international cultural collaboration.
Established in 1957 by decree No. 57-549, the Order of Arts and Letters is a ministerial honor awarded by the French Minister of Culture. It is one of the few French cultural decorations that has remained active even after the creation of the National Order of Merit in 1963. The distinction is granted upon the recommendation of the Order’s Council and recognizes outstanding artistic or literary achievement, or significant contributions to the promotion and dissemination of arts and letters in France and around the world.
The Order consists of three ascending ranks: Chevalier (Knight), Officer, and Commandeur, with each level awarded based on well-defined official criteria.
By receiving the Commander rank, Sheikh Abdulrahman joins a select group of global cultural figures honored for their profound impact and dedication to the world of arts and literature.
