Yesterday, the Philharmonic announced the appointment of
Han-Na Chang as their third Music Director, to join in September 2013. With a
career spanning two decades as a cellist, Chang joins the Qatar Philharmonic
Orchetra as she turns decisively to conducting. She assumes the position of
Music Director at the age of 30 — the same age as the average of its 101
members when it was founded four years ago.
Kurt Meister, Executive Director of the Qatar Philharmonic
Orchestra, anticipates the significant influence Chang will have over the
orchestra. He commented:
“Han-Na has broad knowledge and deep experience, with a
particular edge as a conductor in knowing how string players think and
perceive. The orchestra will grow and evolve with her.”
For his part, Marcel Khalefe stressed the importance of incorporating
Qatari musicians to the philharmonic orchestra pointing the great efforts made
by the music academy to form talented musicians.
